Appliances

When Biobloc was first created in 1968 there was a sequence of four appliances:

Each of which was intended for a slightly different purpose. They remain today very similar to their original format.

Stage 1

The Stage 1, which has several unique features was based largely on an expansion appliance designed by an Austrian dentist Dr Schwartz. Amongst the special features it widens the central suture of the maxilla 10 or more millimetres at almost any age with little tilting of the teeth, it recontours the vault of the palate (see picture) which most others don’t.

Biobloc Expansion

It reduces the Indicator Line encouraging forward growth of the maxilla and aligning the incisors so that fixed appliances are not required, the shelves centre the mandible and encourage it to grow forward.

Stage 2

The Stage 2 maintains the increased width while the patient gets used to the Stage 3 appliance.

Stage 3

The Stage 3 trains the subconscious oral posture. When this is achieved the Stage 3 is worn just at night for two or three years and adjusted to ensure correct oral posture becomes subconscious. Both jaws should grow forward 15 to 30 millimetres or more which should be enough for all 32 teeth and eliminate Jaw Joint and Sleep apnoea problems as well as most Ear Nose and Throat problems. There are additional attachments to cope with Class III, open and deep bites etc.
